Hi Cynthia

I assume you are referring to the cuttlebug machine in regards to the arm, I just looked at mine and there is a screw in there that is circular, I think there is a driver for that, check home hardware, but I would take a picture of the screw inside the arm and that way you can show it to someone at the hardware store.  Hope that helps.  As far as the plates, keep using them until they start to break, and make sure you use both sides of the plates so you get more use out of them, they tend to warp as you know if you only use the one side.  Hope that helps too.  :)  Have a great day.  Hugs!
