Card making, rubber stamping techniques and project videos for papercrafters

Just a fun question. What do you do first when you are going to design a card? Do you pick the paper, or the image? Or maybe something else.Would love to hear what YOU do......

Two scenarios:
#1) I choose the image I want to use first, then I choose a technique, papers, layout etc.

#2) I am working on a challenge and that is what dictates what direction I am going in.

I really like doing it either way.

Good question, Judy.  Like Heidi, I have different scenarios.

1.  I have a new image or die that I want to use.

2. I have a new technique I want to try.

3. I am working on a challenge and that dictates.

The hardest thing for me (not counting CAS designs) is so is pick paper  colors and work with dp.

Great Question Judy! For me if I see a image (like on sneak peeks) I create all kinds of cards in my head before the stamps arrive. I even will write down the idea. Sometimes I just see the image and I know right away what I want to do with it! Then If I see a technique I want to do, I kind of create the card in my head then search for a image, by then the whole card has probably changed!  LOL   Sometimes I pick colors and make a card from there. I have even said to myself… I'm making my own patterned paper and go from there. Sorry Judy, I don't think I was much help on this question..  LOL

I really don't need help. Just thought it would be a fun topic to toss about......fun to see what everyone does.

Judy -

I troll my paper stash first to find 3-4 papers suitable for the occasion (male birthday, get well, etc.) Or try a specific technique for backgrounds that Gina has video'd.  Then I leaf through my book(s) of card sketches (Tanya Fox's Card Maker's Sketch Book  and PaperCrafts' Go To Sketches are my oldies classics. I recently bought Melanie M's Fabulous Stamped Frames after discovering Stamp TV and Tami Mayberry''s Clean and Simple Cards). Once I decide the layout, I go for the focal image and sentiment-- although this influences which layout I choose, too, because I know what stamps I have. Texture, embellishment comes last, usually because the card doesn't quite "feel it" yet. And more frequently recently, I "do" the inside as well with the papers I use on the front. And like Karen, ideas pop into my head so I have written down or drawn out ideas for future reference, so sometimes I just grab this notebook and have at it!

It doesnt matter, because whatever I start with is nowhere close to where I end up..

Most of the time I do an image first.  But then sometimes im playing around making some backgrounds and go with that too.  I guess I just fly by the seat of my pants, ha!

LOL JUdy, I know you didn't need help my dear, But I mean I just wasn't a answerer on this question, because I don't have a rhyme or reason why I do the things I do!  LOLOLOL

Great replies, guys. I think that I try and pick the paper first. The reason being that I need to color my image to match the paper. It's much easier to color the image than to find paper to match, although I have so much paper in my stash you would think I wouldn't have that problem. Why is it, with all that paper, I still can't find the right thing sometimes? HAHA!!!!! Once in awhile I will do an image first though, especially if it's one that I really want to use. Let's keep this thread going, it so much fun to see what everyone does!!

ME TOO, Cindy!!!! That happens to me all the time. I have something in my head, and what I end up with isn't anything like it, but I like what I ended up with better!!!!

Like everyone else, if I'm working on a challenge that dictates my path or if I'm making a card for a specific person I pretty much know where I want to go. The rest of the time my path is dictated by sitting in "my room", looking at all my stuff and deciding what I want to play with. If I want to use alcohol inks that will lead me to certain stamps that lend themselves to that technique. Often I see a technique demonstrated on Stamp TV or elsewhere and will try that and then decide on paper, color etc. I bet that we all have a box of focal points that we've made and saved for later use (the more I watch Stamp TV the bigger that pile gets).  Then there are the times, in the middle of the night, that I start thinking about different techniques I want to try and while I sometimes get good ideas I really wish I would just stay asleep :)

Oh my gosh, I SO do that with the middle of the night thing, Jackie. Sometimes it's when I get my best inspiration. Wonder how many other people do that........
